Market, Limit and Stop Orders
A Market Order tries to execute at the available price; the exact price is not guaranteed. A Buy Limit buys only at the price you set or lower; a fill is not guaranteed. A Stop Order can become a Market Order once it is triggered. Check your broker's exact order rules.
The price is 100. With a Buy Limit at 98, the order can only execute if it gets 98 or a better price. If the price never reaches 98, the order may not fill.
RememberA stop-limit sets a price limit, but it can mean no exit at all. Do not judge an order by its name alone.
